Two inspirational keynote speakers with practical experience in 3D printing and autonomous vehicles respectively will take the stage both days of the show. Day one will focus on mixing biological and functional materials via 3D and the mixtures' impact on human bodies. And day two on the technology within autonomous vehicles that can make autonomous driving safe.

The ability to fuse biological and functional materials via 3D printing could enable the creation of devices possessing revolutionary functionalities, impacting a variety of fields, including regenerative bioelectronics, smart prosthetics, biomedical devices, and human-machine interfaces. Biology — which is three-dimensional, often soft and stretchable, and temperature sensitive — renders most biological platforms incompatible with the fabrication and materials that have been developed for functional electronics, which are often planar, rigid, and brittle. A number of strategies have been developed to overcome these dichotomies, which Michael McAlpine will discuss in his keynote presentation.
Michael C. McAlpine is the Benjamin Mayhugh Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota (2015-Present). Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University (2008-2015). He received a B.S. in Chemistry with honors from Brown University (2000), and an M.A. (2002) and Ph.D. (2006) in Chemistry from Harvard University. His current research is focused on 3D printing functional materials & devices. He has received a number of awards, including the George W. Taylor Award for Distinguished Research, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the Intelligence Community (IC) Young Investigator Award, and more.

From assisted driving systems to driverless robo-taxis, personal mobility is advancing fast, and automated Vehicle (AV) technologies are the cornerstone of this transformation. However, building up functioning AVs is highly complex and often challenging — from raw components to integrated modules or platforms. In this keynote VSI Labs' Founder & Principal, Phil Magney, will decompose the “AV Stack” by examining all the componentry and supporting technologies necessary to build safe automated vehicles. He will also examine the technologies beyond the car including intersections, plus supporting infrastructure such as connectivity and localization assets.
Phil Magney is an automotive electronics expert with more than 25 years’ experience in active safety systems, automated vehicle systems, and telematics. He is the Founder and Principal Advisor of VSI Labs, a leading researcher and engineering advisor on autonomous vehicle technologies. VSI is a registered company within the State of Minnesota. Phil is the author of numerous reports and papers for industry trade publications, as well as a frequent speaker at global automotive and technology conferences. He is trained in ISO 26262 and has a deep understanding of Functional Safety within the context of automotive safety and automated driving. He is an active member of SAE International and contributor to ITS International. Phil graduated in 1981 from the University of Minnesota where he studied math, economics, and information systems.
